Week 9: Dartmouth East is Stepping Up!

Every week I will highlight individuals, groups and businesses who are stepping up and leading the way in the Covid 19 era.

This week: Aaron Peck and Pop Up Cinema

Over the years I have worked with unbelievably talented individuals.  My career in teaching allowed me the chance to collaborate with individuals who are innovative, creative, hardworking, and passionate.  The same applies to politics.   One of the most innovative individuals I had the opportunity to work with is Aaron Peck.  Aaron grew up in East Dartmouth and attended PA “back in the day.”  In 2007, Aaron and I worked together in the Social Studies department at PA and team-taught grade 10 Ancient History.  It was one of the best collaborative experiences of my teaching career.  Aaron was professional, hardworking, and dedicated to his students.

Over the years we lost track of each other.  Aaron continues to teach a multitude of subjects at CP Allen High school and I chose a life in politics.  A few weeks ago, Aaron reached out to me to discuss the possibility of his small business coming to Dartmouth East.  Aaron and his business partner operate Dimensions Entertainment and bring Pop Up Cinema to communities.  This small business provides a service we all can appreciate – a drive in movie!  Especially in the Covid 19 era, it is critical that we not only get out and socialize safely, but that we also get out and support local entrepreneurs.

On Saturday July 4, Aaron and Dimension Entertainment set up their Pop Up Cinema at NSCC Akerley and showcased the film Wonder Park.  It was extremely well coordinated and organized.  You can purchase your ticket and concessions online and when you arrive there are staff to explain public health protocols and direct you where to park.  Along with this fabulous lay out, you have a concession stand available to purchase drinks, popcorn, nachos, chips, and chocolate bars!  This was a dream come true for the Halman kids- and many others who had a great time at Pop Up Cinema.

On behalf of our community of Dartmouth East, I want to thank Aaron Peck and Dimensions Entertainment for the awesome experience they provided to families and youth on July 4.  The next Pop Up Cinema will take place July 18 & 19 at Cole Harbour Place and will showcase "Mean Girls" and "Grease" on the respective dates.  Our community hopes to have Aaron and the team at Pop Up Cinema back in Dartmouth East very soon.

This is just a small sample of folks and organizations making a difference in our community of Dartmouth East.  It is my intention to highlight their stories every week on my blog.  If you have suggestions on who I should profile I can be contacted at [email protected]

Stay strong. Stay safe. Stay positive.
