Week 2: Dartmouth East is Stepping Up!

Every week I will highlight individuals, groups and businesses who are helping and leading the way in the Covid 19 era

Dartmouth East is stepping up!

Square Roots

When I taught at PA, one of the quotes I had on my classroom wall was “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” This is attributed to Harry Truman, the 33rd President of the United States.  It reminds us that when we set out to help others its always best to work together as a team.  This statement has been echoing in my mind these past few days because of a very inspiring meeting that occurred.

Last Thursday, our community came together on a conference call to discuss enhanced supports for residents in our area of Dartmouth East.  I want to thank Councilor Tony Mancini for leading the charge on the initiative to bring 10lb bundles of fresh vegetables to those in need.  It was great to hear from so many grassroots organizations and individuals that want to help.  Folks like Henk Van Leeuwen from the Boys and Girls Club, Colin McCrae from the Port Wallace United Church, John Burton from the Kinsmen, Cyril Muise from the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, and Monique Mullins-Roberts from the Dartmouth Community Health Board, to name just a few.  I want to thank all that participated in this conference call to bring Square Roots to Dartmouth East!

Square Roots is a not for profit that aims to reduce food insecurity. During the Covid 19 era they have been able to provide free produce to those in need in Sackville and in Fairview/Clayton Park. Now, they are in Dartmouth East! To Donate to Square Roots, click here: https://giving.smu.ca/?designation=277&fbclid=IwAR3cXyBYFpvtB_y1ASLUhRjp-3mTii7CuwG33v5Dwjmfou9UEX1cfdRlld8

Starting Friday afternoon, volunteers will gather at the East Dartmouth Community Center to bundle food that will be distributed to those in need in the Dartmouth East area.  You can use the link to the Square Roots Facebook page to sign up to receive a free 10lb bundle of fresh vegetables this weekend (May 30th).  The food will be dropped off on Saturday and will be contactless and following the protocols of public health.  To place an order go here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeGPg7Jx3UmmGGiARzVXzGkydQfuoPAxYskvBOj85FCWJjRcQ/viewform?fbclid=IwAR0F_aNeVsQwKenMI2dLPadcCf8wN9bI1_6a0MBIDGykgWN28VmVxL0Z2wE

Thank you to Jason Craig and all the volunteers at Square Roots for the amazing work they are doing to support residents.  To learn more about Square Roots visit https://squarerootsfood.ca/

This is just a small sample of folks making a difference in our community of Dartmouth East.  It is my intention to highlight their stories every week on my blog.  If you have suggestions on who I should highlight I can be contacted at [email protected]

Stay strong. Stay safe. Stay positive.
